3 Exercises to Improve Your Storytelling Skills

Exercises to Improve Your Storytelling Skills

There comes a point in our life when we’re selling something – an idea, a product, a vision and even just where to grab dinner. We want others to embrace our perspectives, to feel inspired, motivated, or simply engaged.

As growth advisors, we recognize the profound impact of storytelling. It elevates communication beyond the simple exchange of information, creating an emotional connection that sticks.

Here are three exercises that will help you hone your storytelling skills, amplify your message, and leave a message that captivates and compels.

1. Visual Inspiration

Start by selecting a random image or photograph. Let your imagination run wild as you craft a story inspired by this visual cue.

Describe the scene, imagine the characters’ backstories, or speculate on what might happen next. This exercise sharpens your descriptive abilities and teaches you to weave narratives from visual prompts.

2. The 60-30-15 Method

Think of a personal story from your background – something meaningful, impactful, or simply amusing. Now, challenge yourself to tell this story in three different durations: 60 seconds, 30 seconds, and 15 seconds.

In these condensed versions, focus on capturing the essence of the tale. Trim away the excess, leaving behind a potent narrative that packs a punch. This exercise trains you to distill stories to their core, making them more engaging and impactful.

3. Sensory Stories

Immerse your audience in a world of sensations with this exercise. Write a short story that engages all five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.

Describe the vivid colors, the echoing sounds, the tantalizing scents, the flavors dancing on the tongue, and the textures beneath fingertips.

By enriching your narratives with sensory details, you create a more immersive experience for your listeners. They don’t just hear your story; they feel it, smell it, taste it – they live it.

Mastering the Art of Storytelling

Storytelling is more than just words. It’s about creating an experience, making people feel something, and inspiring them to do something.

Think about what you want your listeners to see, hear, and feel. Craft your stories with a PURPOSE, tell them with PASSION, and PROPEL your communication skills to new heights.
